What vitamins are there?

You get vitamins from your daily diet. But eating habits have not improved in recent decades. That is why it is generally recommended to take extra vitamins anyway. Of course, you first need to know what these are and which ones exist. But, there are a lot of different vitamins, so we will start at the beginning.

What are vitamins?

Vitamins are organic molecules. They are molecules that, in small quantities, are very important for your body. This is because they allow different organisms to function properly.

Essential nutrients can sometimes be poorly made by your own body. That is why we all eat what we eat, to get these vitamins through that route.

What types of vitamins are there?

Today, there are 13 known vitamins. They all have their own characteristics and help your body in some way. First, you need to understand the difference between water-soluble and fat-soluble vitamins.

What are water-soluble vitamins?

Water-soluble vitamins include the vitamin B spectrum as well as vitamin C. More specifically, water-soluble vitamins include the following:

  • Vitamin B12

  • Vitamin B6
  • Pantothenic acid (B5)
  • Niacin (B3)
  • Riboflavin (B2)
  • Thiamine (B1)

What are fat-soluble vitamins?

The best-known fat-soluble vitamins, on the other hand, are known as the "ADEK" vitamins. So it speaks for itself:

  • Vitamin A
  • Vitamin D (D2, D3)
  • Vitamin E
  • Vitamin K

You can find fat-soluble vitamins in products containing fat. Examples are fats for spreading like butter, fish, meat, milk and nuts.

What is the difference between water-soluble and fat-soluble vitamins?

Water-soluble vitamins are actually less well absorbed in the body. So they leave the body more easily. This usually happens through your urine. Fat-soluble vitamins, on the other hand, can leave the body more difficult and "stick". This happens via the bile or via your urine.

Simply put: of water-soluble vitamins, you can't really take in too much because they will simply leave your body. With fat-soluble vitamins, you better be careful with large doses. A surplus is difficult to leave your body. At high doses, this can have harmful consequences over time. So, be careful when taking fat-soluble vitamins. Most importantly, do not drastically exceed the daily recommended amount.

However, vitamin B12 is an exception within water-soluble vitamins because it does stay in the body longer. But studies show that taking too much does not have a harmful side effect on your body.

Do you need vitamins?

Normally, a balanced diet should give your body the vitamins it needs. But what is the perfect diet?And how do you know if you need extra vitamins?
